Inspired by a lovely viewing of
Low in Europe last night, I remembered a phrase that I still cling to, and thought was worth repeating here:
Where the crowd is, therefore, or where a decisive importance is attached to the fact that there is a crowd, there no one is working, living, and striving for the highest end, but only for this or that earthly end; since the eternal, the decisive, can only be worked for where there is one; and to become this by oneself, which all can do, is to will to allow God to help you - "the crowd" is untruth.
-Soren Kierkegaard
If there were any way to sum up the attitude of the
truly independant-minded musicians that I (and so many, many others) embrace as the true spirit behind innovative music, that is it. That, and "Godsmack sucks."
Rita was a bit miffed by the attitudes of the band members, who were a bit somber and tended to wax philosophical while avoiding the camera -- "They really need to smile. and sleep." as she put it. However, while I totally get that, I think that's part that resonates most deeply with me. Low has been a band for nearly 15 years, touring their butts off and putting out amazing albumts -- and they can still feed themselves by doing so. If you can make a life for yourself that is nearly devoid of groupthink, remains independant of corporate pushes (as much as possible, anyway), and satisfies you -- hell, what's better? I hope to someday be so lucky.
PS - Rita now says she's inspired to start playing live again. ATTN: World -- be ready to hear more good music soon.
